Artistry in cake design
Karen owns and runs the Wealden Cake Company, based in rural East Sussex, specialising in hand-crafted Wedding Cakes, Celebration Cakes and Cup Cakes. She took a leap of faith after being made redundant from her role running a kitchen in a nursing home to set-up her own business 4 years ago, making use of her creative talents to combine both her love of design with her love of food. And all this whilst looking after her home and 5 children with her husband – all of whom are very proud of her.
Having been running her business from home, Karen moved into her own studio in Etchingham at the beginning of May 2018, where her business is thriving. In fact, Karen has achieved all the goals from her 5 year business plan in her first year!
The shop front in the heart of the community and a friendly internal space as well as professional kitchen enables Karen to meet clients to discuss their requirements, really getting to know them and form relationships that will encourage people to remain loyal customers as well as having space to craft bespoke cakes. Karen is finding she’s able to let her creativity flow to translate dreams into reality. In fact, she feels that she’s more productive now that she has dedicated space to work on her designs. The separation of home and business is working well for the whole family.
At home, reliable modern broadband is key for Karen and her family. Whether it's so that her husband can work from home, Karen can use the internet to research ideas, or her children can carry out their school and university work effectively, the need for reliable broadband is high. The eSussex project has enabled fibre broadband to the cabinet that serves Karen at home – something that delights the whole family and allows them to carry out many activities, including using social media, streaming programmes and so on.
Now that Karen has her own studio space, she has found that the eSussex project has also enabled fibre broadband to the cabinet that will serve her business premises, and is taking steps to sign up to a superfast fibre service there.
